David

Army Veteran

An Army veteran, David, lived under a highway overpass in Memphis when Dana Prewitt found him during a winter outreach. David had given up hope due to severe PTSD and depression. By working one-on-one with him, Dana was able to gain his trust and connect him to mental health resources through a local VA clinic. Furthermore, he was able to secure him a place in a temporary housing program for veterans. As a result of Dana’s encouragement, David began attending therapy regularly and began working with a job training program that helped him rediscover his passion for woodworking. A small woodworking business was started by David within six months of moving into stable housing. In addition to creating furniture and other handmade items, he also donates a portion of his sales to support veterans in need.

Tanya

navy veteran

Tanya, a Navy veteran and single mother, lived in her car with her two young children after fleeing an abusive relationship. She was connected to Dana Prewitt through a local veterans’ nonprofit focused on helping women. Dana not only helped Tanya secure emergency shelter for her family but also worked tirelessly to find her affordable long-term housing. Dana advocated for Tanya, helping her access childcare assistance and enrolling her in a job training program for veterans. Tanya eventually secured a position as an office administrator, which allowed her to regain financial independence. She now lives in a safe apartment with her children and volunteers with Dana to support other women veterans in crisis.

Mike

Marine Corps

Mike, a Marine Corps veteran, had been struggling with addiction and homelessness for several years before meeting Dana at an outreach event in downtown Memphis. A veteran-focused rehabilitation program was recommended to Mike by Dana, who recognized that he needed specialized care. He was provided with unwavering support throughout his recovery by Dana, who regularly checked in and offered words of encouragement. When Mike had completed rehab, Dana assisted him in finding a stable job at a local manufacturing plant and securing a room in a veterans’ housing program. Over the past year, Mike has been sober and recently received a promotion at work. It was Dana who not only helped him get off the streets, but also believed in him when no one else did.
